The first man in space

This week marks the 50th anniversary of Yuri Gagarin’s orbital flight in Vostok 1

So I’d like to take a brief rest from talking risk to honour Yuri Gagarin and all the men and women who followed him into space in the pursuit of humanity’s dream.

Long after the politics of the cold war and national ambition have faded into the dust we will remember these pioneers.

And for the man who went first a special place of honour, for Yuri Gagarin there were no footprints in front to follow, this was truly stepping into the unknown. And if you want a glimpse of what it was like a short film First Orbit has been made for this anniversay.

In our risk averse western culture we should reflect on the bravery of these space pioneers and their willingness to dare all. Sometimes the game really is worth the candle.

Major Yuri Gagarin Salyut!
